Plan your trip - even if you are only planning on a few hours out in the bush.
Tell someone where you are planning to hike to and the route you will be taking.
Never hike alone - no matter how tempting this may be!
Be aware of the weather - even forecasts can be wrong; mountains have their own unstable wind currents and temperature variations not felt at lower altitudes.
Watch the skies - not just for cloud pattern changes but also for veld-fire smoke in dry conditions.
Know your physical limits - its always good to go out and get fit, nevertheless a first-time hike should be done on relatively easy terrain, and not too long. 10km would be an average limit for average to below fitness on easy to moderate terrain.
Take sufficient supplies, as the bare minimum:
- minimum water of 1,5litres is imperative, for a few hours out. Rather take too much than too little.
- light weight, waterproof jacket just in case even in clear weather
- snacks for extra energy
Someone in the group should always be in charge, even if you go on a hike with friends, determine who will take charge in the event of an emergency.
